Haiti Relief Efforts

Tuesday’s horrible earthquake in Haiti and its tragic impact affected the entire country. Amidst all the fundraising efforts, I want to tip my hat to the American Red Cross for its immediate, innovative and creative communications strategy on the situation in Haiti.

Here’s how the Red Cross’ stellar communication innovation is boosting the impact of disaster communications:

  1. Pushing out the latest from Haiti via the Disaster Online Newsroom, a blog that makes it easy for Red Cross staff to share information with the world
  2. Producing almost-real-time, short-form, easy-to-absorb video updates faced by the relief effort. This video was “on the air” (via the blog) five hours after the earthquake struck.
  3. Sharing the Red Cross’ relief strategy as it evolves (via the video). The weak infrastructure in Haiti has resulted in the collapse of many entries into the damaged entries. The Red Cross outlines its preparation in surrounding countries for entering Haiti today.
  4. Making it incredibly easy to give via mobile phone.Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti.
  5. Mobilizing social media tools to spur awareness, giving and conversation in multiple communities. You can follow the Red Cross’ Haitian relief news via Twitter(@RedCross), the org blog and Facebook.

Overall, the Red Cross is doing a great job in utilizing a broad range of communications channels and capitalizing on each one’s strengths.

Further, another fundraising model worth noting is Chicago-based design company, Uncommon. They’re currently selling a special collection of Haiti relief iPhone cases (pictured above) for $40 with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.

I also came across this list of Haitian Community Centers of New York Metropolitan Area

Finally, here is a link to immediate online contribution sites.

Wine Tour de France at FiaF

The New York City French Institute Alliance Française mission is to “promote and enhance the knowledge and appreciation of French and Francophone culture, to increase the knowledge of the French language, and to encourage interaction among French, Francophone and American people through programs in education and the arts.” Founded at the turn of 20th century, the French Institute and the Alliance Française de New York operated as two separate organizations, the first promoting French arts, the second teaching French. In 1971 they merged to form what has become one of the largest and most respected centers of French-American activities in the U.S: the French Institute Alliance Française.

Each month—from February through June—Michael Madrigale, Chef Sommelier of Bar Boulud, leads guests through France’s diverse wine-producing regions with a focus on grape varieties / cépages.

This year, FIAF adds a special seventh tasting of Château Smith Haut Lafitte at Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa® at The Plaza, free to those who purchase the whole series!

Purchase the full series, any three specific tastings, or select individual tastings today before tickets sell out!

French Institute: Tour de France Wine Tasting Series
Burgundy, February 1
Rhône Valley, February 22
Bordeaux, March 29
Alsace, April 19
Loire Valley, May 10
Champagne, June 7
For six evenings, attendees will taste wines of each region, discovering how each grape variety’s essential characteristics translate into delicious wines. Guests will also sample some of France’s cheeses and charcuterie, learning how to use specific varieties to pair wines with food. With the help of Southern Wine & Spirits of New York, Mr. Madrigale will lead wine lovers on an unforgettable journey.

Museum of Chinese in America

The goal of the new Museum of Chinese in America is to explore the experience of Chinese immigration and the evolution of Chinese communities in the United States. The museum takes a contemporary look at the impact of Chinese immigration to American culture. As you walk through the Museum of Chinese in America, in a warm and inviting new space designed by Maya Lin, you can’t see these objects and not be aware of the kinds of challenges these immigrants once faced. Such artifacts also reflect the expanded ambitions of the museum itself: it began as a community institution almost 30 years ago, dedicated to preserving and commemorating the history of Chinatown, and has now grown to a 14,000-square-foot space and national ambition.

With these ambitions the institution is joining an ever-lengthening roster of American museums of identity. All of them — whether they deal with Latino-Americans, Jewish-Americans, Nordic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Arab-Americans or African-Americans — are celebrations of hyphenated existence.
