Manuel Isidro, or Manu as he likes to be called, came to the US in 1995 from Guayaquil, Ecuador. He remembers feeling mixed emotions about leaving his mom and sister
in Ecuador and meeting his family in Brooklyn. Manu fantasized about his new life in America from watching Baywatch and Full House. However, reality quickly sank
in as he took his first steps in a dark Bushwick street. (Back in the 1990's Bushwich was one of the poorest and roughest neighborhoods in NYC.)
Manu talks about being eager to learn English and the challenges transitioning to his American life. Fifteen years later, he still lives and works in Brooklyn. "Many things have changed, streets, businesses, neighbors, and I have to admit I changed too," he says.
